| Salto's Crimson Gymtalk...A great place to keep up with the GymTide! |

Saturday, April 22, 2006 "If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride - and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards." - Paul Bryant What a great night of gymnastics and how proud we all are of our team, coaches, and staff. Those of us lucky enough to be in the arena last night drew inpiration from the knowledge that the entire Bama GymNation was out there pulling for the Tide and we cheered extra loud because of it. Bama GymCheerleader extraordinaire, RaRa Russ, had nothing left after the meet, we were all hoarse from shouting, and the team got some of that 'Coleman Coliseum Magic' from our efforts. I really believe that all the efforts of the fans for the entire season; the huge crowds at home, the loyal following on the road, the intense interest, love, and respect the Bama GymNation shows the team - all of these things - helped to lift the Tide up and give the mighty GymDogs a run for the money. The GymTide did all they could, they never gave up - the GymDogs were just a little better. So, a tip of the hat to Georgia. And a big Roll Tide to the Bama GymNation, the GymTide, and, especially, to the 2006 senior class, what an inspiration you have all been! posted by Salto | 2:16 PM Friday, April 21, 2006 I've said it before, I'll say it again...I hate Regionals and I hate the Thursday session at Nationals. OK, maybe "hate" is a strong word - and I know I should be glad the GymTide made it this far. I am, but that doesn't help with the sheer pressure of it all. We all know how hard all the teams have worked to get to this point, it always seems a shame that everyone doesn't get to advance. The 2006 version of the Thursday session was typical: tense. Made more so for the fans by the prospect of the Tide ending their afternoon on balance beam. That didn't bother the team, though. Not even the totally surprising fall that Britany Magee suffered leading off on beam was capable of shaking the beam team's confidence. (It's rare to see Brittany fall, even in practice, but anybody can fall from beam - that's why it's the great 'equalizer' in women's gymnastics.) Most of the session, for us, was filled with adding up scores and sweating out routines - in other words: the usual. The scoreboards here are quite helpful, keeping individual scores, running event totals, and running overall scores up at all times. So, it's a fairly simple matter to keep up with where you stand. The team looked relaxed and focused, just as they looked in the Wednesday practice. The scores started out quite low, but the team is used to that by now and never let it get to them. I expect they will be the same for the Finals. posted by Salto | 12:36 PM Thursday, April 20, 2006 Time to shine... The team, the coaches - even the fans - spend a long time each season preparing for this day, the beginning of the National Finals. A lot of hopes and dreams are tied up in the outcome of today's competition. By the end of the day we will know who the 2006 All-Around National Champion will be, we will know which gymnasts attain All-American status, we will learn which gymnasts will compete Saturday night for individual event National Championships, and, of course, which six team will compete for the team championship tomorrow night. posted by Salto | 10:35 AM Wednesday, April 19, 2006 Just back from practice... ...and a trip to Michael's Landing Restaurant, which is located on the banks of the Willamette river in the old Corvallis train station. Both stops were quite successful. Practicing along with the Tide were Michigan, Utah, and Oklahoma. The teams followed their rotation schedule for tomorrow's afternoon session, without the byes. (There will be three, four-team practice sessions, rather than two, six-team sessions. This lets the teams practice straight through without waiting through byes, thereby shortening the total practice time for each team.) The practice session began on floor exercise for the GymTide; with Kaitlin White, Erin Rightley, Ashley O'Neal, Terin Humphrey, Brittany Magee, Courtney Priess, Melanie Banville, and Ashley Miles warming up. The main purpose of the Wednesday practice is to get used to the equipment, which Bama seemed to accomplish quickly. Unlike the configuration now being used at Coleman Coliseum, the floor mat is located right in the center of one sideline of the arena, with the vault runway behind. The beam and bars are on either side of the floor mat. Bama rotated to vault next, featuring Dana Filetti, Melanie Banville, Kaitlin White, Brittany Magee, Ashley O'Neal, Terin Humphrey, and the 'M&M girls' - Brittany Magee and Ashley Miles. There were some good landings, and some not so good. But, again, the main point was to get used to the equipment, so mission accomplished. The bars rotation found Cassie Martin, Terin Humphrey, Kaitlin White, Ashley Miles, Melanie Banville, Mari Bayer, Dana Filetti, and Courtney Priess warming up. Once again, there were no really noteworthy problems adjusting to the equipment. Cassie Martin looked very smooth working through her routine, as did Mari Bayer. Melanie Banville seemed to take a little longer getting her timing down, but, actually, we've come to expect that. Melanie is very meticulous in her preparation - of course, the results speak for themselves for the newly crowned SEC uneven bars co-champion. The bars team, in general, has really stepped it up in the later half of the season, becoming a high-scoring threat each time out. Bama's final practice rotation, the beam, was perhaps their best rotation of the afternoon. The beam warm-up team consisted of Ashley Miles, Ashley O'Neal, Melanie Banville, Mari Bayer, Erin Rightley, Brittany Magee, Dana Filetti, and Terin Humphrey. Terin's 'Humphrey' was working great, to go along with some nice work on her flight series and dismount. Ashley Miles started off with a hop off the beam while attempting her tough mount, but then she ended up with probably the best mount we've seen her do - landing perfectly in control with zero balance checks. Mari Bayer was absolutely perfect for much of the beam warm-up, with some nice flight series andfront aerials. Mari is not back to the 'old Mari', she's actually even better on beam than ever. It's a real testimony to the resilience of the senior leader, who suffered through three seasons worth of trials and tribulations just this year alone, but who never-the-less has overcome it all. Bama ended the practice with a cheer and a big Roll Tide! The team was focused and confident throughout. The coaches also looked pleased and met with the team just briefly before sending them to the bus. I should also mention that WVUA's Chad Anderson was on hand, working on getting the broadcast ready for tomorrow. The broadcast may be heard on on 90.7 FM in Tuscaloosa, on the web at www.gymtide.com, and, hopefully, inside Gill Coliseum at 107.5 FM. (Those of you familiar with the 'away radio coverage' provided by the football team when on the road will be familiar with this type of broadcast.)
